Up to the present day, the importance of hunting has often been underestimated in neolithization research. This changes to the degree by which the variability of game percentages is attested and the conviction gained that the bones of game not only possess an economic information value but also a social and symbolic potential of investigation. The present volume illustrates this under many aspects. An introduction in both French and German is followed by ten articles on the origin and distribution of the Linear Pottery, on hunting in the Late Mesolithic and the Linear Pottery Culture, hunting and husbandry in LBK 1, game percentages in the French Rubané Culture, the concept of wild animals in the Rubané, faunal grave goods of the Hinkelstein and Großgartach Cultures, on hunting as a cause of faunal diversity in the archaeological evidence, on the problem of estimating the importance of hunting and husbandry in Switzerland, and on the question of aurochs or cattle. The volume concludes with a list of participants, German and French explanations on a data-base of the Early Neolithic and its Archaeozoology, the data-base itself and four bibliographies.
